Suella Braverman’s outrageous attack on asylum seekers, describing them as an “invasion on our Southern coast” - a day after petrol bombs were hurled at an asylum centre in Dover - is a grotesque attempt to stir up racism and blow the dog whistle.

The fact that Suella Braverman had been warned by government lawyers about the risks of inspiring far right terror with the use inflammatory language makes her statement even more despicable.

Braverman’s statement has already galvanised the far right. Giving legitimacy and oxygen to their ideas can only lead to more Dover style violence and embolden racists and fascists to take to the streets.
